14 Peck Slip

Edward Dee

This is not a review. Let me just say that. I started this book thinking it was going to a fine little detective story. It grabbed me from page 1, held my interest for a few chapters - and then my mind began to wander. As a result - it took me over a week to finish a small paperback book. Was it bad? No, I don't really think so. Was it good? I'm not sure. Would people here like it? I kind of think so.

It's a police procedural - set in NYC of the 1980's. 2 detectives see a barrel being dumped into the East River. They find what they think is the barrel - but it contains the body of a policeman missing for over 10 years. The Mob is involved, there's some conflict with the wife, the partner's father is involved. It's pretty standard fare. I think. I'm not a huge police procedural reader, but my suspicion is that for that genre - it is a fairly good book. I didn't guess the ending - but I wasn't totally shocked by it either - I was getting some vibes along the way.

Will I read another? Yes - but only because they've been lent to me by a friend and I feel I have to. I will put long spaces in between and hopefully the next one will catch me in a better frame of mind.
