Nathaniel's Nutmeg provides a historical look at the spice trade and early colonialism in the same region as The Song of the Dodo. An interesting look at something we take for granted now, spices provided riches and started wars - or at least some serious battles. And one trade that was made during the negotiation between England and The Netherlands was for a small island called Manhattan.
