Buried somewhere in the descriptions of farmlands and wooly bears there is a wonderful story about rural America and the hardships of life. There is an interesting cast of characters and the story excels when it focuses on them, but the flowery language bored me as did Campbell's relentless tendency to fill in superfluous detail. When she focused, however, she always hit her mark.
