I just finished Simon R Green's "Drinking Midnight Wine" and what a delightful journey it's been. In this fast paced and very often witty novel Green creates alternate universes and fills them with characters who snap and sizzle right off the pages. The dialogue is catchy and often laugh out loud funny. The characters are, while not reliably credible, some of the most absurd you'll turn pages with. We have the bored, drifting through life mortal who becomes a focal point for an alternate universe on its way to mass destruction. He erringly follows a non-mortal through a doorway one rainy evening and finds himself in a land of talking mirrors, Norse Gods with Berserker rage, hippies who find being mice preferable to being humans in a world no longer kind to them, and of course, no alternate universe is complete without the troll under the bridge. This is just a small portion of the interesting and far too often darkly humourous characters you'll meet when the ley lines open. Green keeps the water boiling with a hot little romance to spur the story along. Green has written a great little story here, sure to delight any fantasy fan and especially those who favor the alternate universe fare.
