Light on Snow

Anita Shreve

I'd been a fan of Shreve's in the past but I thought several of her recent books were disappointing so I approached this one with hesitation. I was pleasantly surprised to find a tender coming of age story that's rich in atmosphere and features sympathetic characters. Twelve year old first person narrator Nicky Dillon and her father are wreaking out an existence in a remote New Hampshire town when a situation arises that challenges their status quo and challenges them to move beyond it. It's a touching exploration of loss and healing and I rated it an 8.5 despite some plot details that were a little more convenient than they might have been.
