Scandalous, turn-of-the-century drama (1899) about 15 year old Olympia (well-bred and well-educated), her affair with a 45 year old married man (a doctor and her father's friend) and the long term repercussions of their relationship once they are found out. Shields unfolds the story beautifully and carefully, giving us the full impact this has on Olympia (and her family) and her emotional struggle to re-invent her life in the midst of the aftermath. It's not exactly literature but it's not pure fluff either. It's...well...it's Anita Shreve.
