Kapuscinski is a Polish journalist with a huge reputation. Like Staying On, Another Day of Life deals partly with the disintegration of colonial power but in this case we are in Angola in 1974 at the time of the shambolic Portuguese withdrawal. It's a book crowded in with despair. By the the 1970s the optimism of the emerging African nations granted independence by Britain and France ten or more years earlier was long gone. As the reader now knows and Kapuscinski at the time seemed to sense Angola was yet another potentially rich country already well on the road to ruin.
