Slaughtermatic

Steve Aylett

Slaughtermatic is a reminder that no one else writes quite like Steve Aylett. We're once again in standard Aylett territory: A comic nightmarish vision of the future where crime functions as an art form. The setting is, as ever, Beerlight, "the blown circuit, where to kill a man is less a murder than a mannerism" and capital city of Aylettland. The cast list comprises in the main characters from earlier Aylett outings including Download Jones and Brute Parker. There's a plot in there somewhere but with Aylett plot isn't really the point. There's plenty of fizz in the language, of course, with Chief "y'ain't been a bigot over rough terrain .. the mettle o' your prejudices ain't been tested" Blince stealing all the best lines.
