I find it rather interesting that, as Dare Wright got older, the Lonely Doll books got more conventional, more closely akin to the dreams of a young girl. Edith and Midnight may be the crux to which the whole series was moving, in that regard. Edith dreams of owning a pony. When Mr. Bear, Edith, and Little Bear move out to the country, Edith and Little Bear spy a wild pony that grazes on their property, and set out to befriend and tame it. It's an almost shockingly tame storyline for the Lonely Doll books. Not to say there's not the usual underlying tension, focusing (as so many in the series did) on Edith and Little Bear's differing priorities, but the big surprise is the pony itself-- a live animal in the Lonely Doll books? 'Tis true! Photographed in the same austere black and white as the other books in the series; despite this one being almost fifteen years into Wright's composition of Lonely Doll titles, it looks much the same, except for the pony's addition, as other Lonely Doll books. Still, if you liked the others, you'll get a kick out of this one.
