As for The River King, it was full of magical realism, but in a reasonable way. Things like the roses being so fragrant that everyone in town looked up at the scent. Could darn well smell them myself. It was a neat book - full of sensations (the water scenes in particular were well-written) and with just a touch of eerieness. I gave it a 'very good' rating. I'm thinking that only certain people can write like that - I certainly could not. Too practical or something. And yet Hoffman writes like that is truly how she experiences the world.
