The Cage

Audrey Schulman

Purchase this title at B&N

Reminiscent of London, Schulman craft a modern tale of man against nature. A naure magazine sponsors a photographer and a videographer to do a documentary 40 miles from the middle of nowhere. The topic, polar bears.

The story begins with Beryl, recently breaking up with her boyfriend, wanting to extend her skills and take a risk. She is chosen as the main photographer for the expedition primarily because she can fit inside the cage, which will be put on the ice so that close ups can be taken of the bears.

The expedition gets aclimated (yeah, right) to the -30 to -40 temperatures (and folk, it doesn't matter if that is farenheit or celsius, it is still darn cold either way) in a small village of 600 called Churchill, Manitoba, and also to wait for their specially outfitted truck/van/SUV which will take them 40 miles further north to the edge of the sea.

The trip back is a bit harrowing.

Great read.
