Just started reading this book for one of my face2face groups. It wasn't one of my choices as I tend to pick fiction and this is a nonfiction book. I do think I am going to glad that someone suggested it. I am only on page 28 but the book so far is very good. Mortenson is a mountain climber. He is climbing K2 which is what they call the second highest mountain in the world. This mountian is located in Pakistan, I did not know this so I have already learned something. Mortenson gets lost on the way down. He becomes diorientated and loses his partner. Eventually he comes to be in a very poor little village where he stays until his traveling compangions are able to come and get him. This was in 1993, since then he has taken on the dangerous mission of setting up schools in the wildest parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan. From the blurbs on the book jacket and the forward by Relin (who is a journalist) it seems that Mortenson is quite a character. He was raised in Africa by American missionaries and it sounds as if he likes to live life on the edge. As far as I can gather, he has not embraced his parents religion but he has created a spirituality that is his own. I am always amazed and envious of those who have had so much exposure to other cultures, not to mention those who also have the talent required to write it all down.
