I finished The Quiet American by Graham Greene yesterday. I had been wanting to sample his writing for a long time based upon opinions here in the barn.About the first quarter to third of the book, I was forming an opinion that the book and writing were showing their age (it was published in 1955). However, it had drawn me in and now I must say that he was one very, very fine writer whom I will revisit. It's a short book, about 180 pages, but he had an extraordinary talent to be able to paint places, people and things much as a miniaturist can capture the essentials ...
