The Red Tent

Anita Diamant

I had some reservations about it being based on the Bible (my problem, no offense meant to anyone in anyway shape or form), but it was a good story. Not the best writing, maybe, but definitely interesting; women in those times (and place) sure led a different life. Being a midwife was either like being an angel (when things went fine) or like being a witch (when things turnd sour, as they often did). Not a profession I would have chosen at that time. And the red tent is something I'll think about every month now...imagine 3 days off to just sit and visit with the women of your family. I had questioned the whole whack of women ending up in there within a day of each other, but turns out that Kingsolver agrees (in Prodigal Summer) - if women are exposed to moonlight for long enough, their cycles will match up with the moon, and of course, each other. Cool, huh?
