Snow in August

Pete Hamil

Purchase this title at B&N

I finished a book last night that I just loved. It was titled Snow in August by Pete Hamil. I picked this up from the library and almost took it back without reading it. It's told by a 10ish year old boy named Michael and is all albout growing up, and the "extreme" prejudice against African Americans and Jews. He struggles to try and understand why there is so much hate. He makes friends with a Jewish Rabbi who teaches him Yiddish while Michael helps the Rabbi with English. Michael makes some enemies with a gang called the Falcons because of his friendship with the Rabbi, and he's too small to fight back but ends up dealing with his enemies in a most inspiring and mysterious way.
