The God of Small Things

Arundhati Roy

I think the best thing about this book is Roy's poetic style, which Carla mentioned. She truly has a beautiful way with words. The story focuses on the events within a family in India - a specific few days in particular are detailed. It's like micro/macro, micro/macro, as the lifelong impact of the few days' events are painfully revealed. Rather poignant, but something is holding me back from a hearty endorsement. Maybe it's the restrictive culture in India that I couldn't get around. So many limitations, so un-American. Or could be the tragic lives at the hand of selfish decisions, harsh judgements. Couldn't help but be reminded of A Fine Balance, also set in India, also somewhat tragic.
