Middle novel of the Rune Sword Trilogy. In order to save their world from an impending sorcerous army, three brothers have to unite many petty "kingdoms" under one king. With the help of (what else?) a rune sword, one is chosen to be the high king, but he must remain true to the sword or it will fail him. Pretty standard fantasy stuff.
