This book is a combination mystery/thriller layered under the story of a family - members of the academically elite "darker nation". Talcott Garland, the main character and narrator of the story, is a black university law professor. After his father the judge dies, Talcott's life is embroiled in finding and deciphering a mystery "arrangement" that his father has left behind, which brings him in contact with FBI, shady characters, and a mysterious woman follower. In addition to solving the "arrangement", Talcott also has to deal with his failing relationship with his wife Kimmer, a high powered lawyer who is being considered for a federal judicial position, and various problems with assorted colleagues at the university where he is employed. The book is also full of the author's philosophy concerning the politics of the "paler nation" versus the "darker nation". This book is wordy and complex and, even though the story bogged down at times, I loved the richness of this author's writing. It's a lengthy book (672 pages) and not a book that is read quickly. The mystery part moves very slowly but is worthwhile for those who stick with it until the end.
