This felt like a very interesting book that I just couldn't get interested in. The word on the street has been that you don't need to care about horses to enjoy this story (I'm sure it was the publisher's PR/Marketing person who originally spread that rumor), but I think you do need to have some love of horses or of horseracing in order to really appreciate it. I've been known to place a bet now and then but I'm not one to care much about that particular world so I had a hard time commiting to this book. I never got past page 70.
