No, I hadn't read this before. Schmidtie is a retired lawyer that has worked largely in insurance law as a partner in his firm. The Schmidt family is well-to-do, both from individual success and inheritance. Schmidt's wife dies, and his daugher is engaged to a Jewish partner in the firm. As the story unfolds, there is the slow disintegration of family as money, inheritance, the wedding, and a girlfriend younger than Schmidt's daughter all lead to an interesting read.
