The Dangerous Game

William Harris &
L.G. Alexander

Purchase this title at amazon.co.uk

A couple of weeks ago I saved a bunch of English books from being destroyed by our local library (they were replaced by new copies, no fear!). Among them where a few classics and this little novel. Although you can hardly call it a novel with its 54 pages, 2 characters and a 2 room setting, more like a play or "long" short story.

It was a very very simple story but quite intriguing as well. It tells us about William Harris a widowed, of 12 years, author of detective stories and his house spirit Poldy. He himself tells the story. Everything starts out as rather fun, him and the spirit playing games at night. At one point those games turn very nasty and things get completely out of hand and of course in the end William ends up dead. The language is very simple (probably because it is a book meant for high school reading) but setting that aside this was a nasty little story with just enough horror for me!
