The Lovely Bones

Alice Sebold

Purchase this title at B&N

I am not overly enthusiastic about this book, I expected far more from it than what I got.

It's the story about a 14 year old girl Susie who is killed by a neighbor Mr. Harvey who turns out to be a serial killer of especially young girls. She dies and goes to heaven from there she tells the story of her family and friends, in the present and past, and the way her death affects all of them in an enormous way. I liked Susie and the way she stood out in the book, but was not to keen on how the other players in the book where described. Sebold didn't manage to get me involved and really feeling for them.

The first half of the book was well written, original and was keeping me interested. After the first half (I don't know the exact point) it goes totally wrong. It seems like Sebold has no idea what to write about anymore and starts making all kinds of silly story and plot twists which make no sense at all and contribute nothing to the story. At the point where Susie and Ruth had a soul change I almost started laughing out loud. The latter part of the book , to me, was like a bad rip off from Ghost.

So mixed emotions because I think Sebold does have talent to write a good novel but this isn't the one. It's a bit flat.
