Speaking with the Angel

Nick Hornby

Purchase this title at B&N

Seems to me it's hard to review a set of twelve short stories without getting complicated and going into plot and character details twelve times over. So I'll keep things simple. Nick Hornby gets a bunch of writing mates together and they do the book. And it's for charidee and a damn fine sounding one at that. Nice foreword by Hornby himself explaining where your pound will be used, though since mine came from ebay I guess, technically, I haven't contributed yet. Note to self: ought to correct this.

The best of the stories come at the start (Robert Harris's 'PMQ') and the end (John O'Farrell's 'Walking into the Wind'). Sandwiched in between are stories by Patrick Marber, Dave Eggers, Zadie Smith, Roddy Doyle, Colin Firth, Helen Fielding, Giles Smith, Irvine Welsh, Melissa Bank and a strong showing from Hornby himself.

There, I think I've kept it simple. Purchase and enjoy if any of those names light your own particular fires.
